In September 2009<\/strong> I started my business \u2013 without a website, without a marketing plan, and without a clue what the future would bring. It was simply me, with the mission to deliver the best workshops \u2013 and the hope that quality would spread by word of mouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today I look back on over 100 workshops<\/strong>, numerous keynotes<\/strong>, personal coachings<\/strong>, and large projects<\/strong>. I never imagined I would reach so many people and have such an impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the road wasn\u2019t always easy. Some lessons I had to learn the hard way. If I could turn back time, these are the 10 things I wish I had known before starting my business:<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n

\n\n\n

1\ufe0f\u20e3 Saying \u201cNo\u201d is a superpower<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In the beginning, out of fear of losing clients, I said yes<\/em> to everything. I thought every rejected project was a missed opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It took me years to realize that a no<\/em> is often the best decision for my business \u2013 and for me. It gives you the space to focus on the right<\/strong> projects, the right<\/strong> clients, and the meaningful<\/strong> tasks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

Lesson:<\/strong> You don\u2019t grow by saying yes<\/em> to everything \u2013 but by consciously saying no<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n\n\n

2\ufe0f\u20e3 Freedom isn\u2019t free<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

One of the main reasons I started my own business was freedom<\/strong> \u2013 the freedom to decide when and how I work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But here\u2019s the truth: Freedom has its price.<\/strong> You decide when you work \u2013 which often means working all the time<\/em>. If I\u2019m not holding a workshop, I\u2019m coaching, writing proposals, or planning the next big project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

Lesson:<\/strong> Freedom is a privilege \u2013 but it also requires discipline and clear boundaries.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n

\n\n\n

3\ufe0f\u20e3 You never really switch off<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

When you run your own business, you are always on<\/em>. Your thoughts constantly circle around new ideas, better solutions, and future projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s exhausting \u2013 but also magical. Some of my best ideas came in exactly those \u201crestless\u201d moments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

Lesson:<\/strong> \u201cSwitching off\u201d doesn\u2019t really exist \u2013 but that\u2019s often where the best ideas are born.<\/p>\n

4\ufe0f\u20e3 You\u2019ll love it more than you think<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

It won\u2019t feel like \u201cwork\u201d \u2013 but like a calling<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Running a business is hard \u2013 really hard. But when you do something you love<\/strong>, the long hours don\u2019t feel like a burden but like an investment<\/strong> in something that truly matters to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lesson:<\/strong> Build something you believe in \u2013 and even the hardest days will be worth it.<\/p>\n

5\ufe0f\u20e3 Trust yourself \u2013 sooner<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

For a long time, I doubted myself. Was I good enough? Would people really book my workshops?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then the emails<\/strong> started coming. People wrote to me about how much my workshops had changed their lives. If only I had known earlier what was possible…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

Lesson:<\/strong> Don\u2019t wait for permission to believe in yourself. You are more capable than you think.<\/p>\n

6\ufe0f\u20e3 What\u2019s \u201cobvious\u201d to you is gold for others<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

What seemed easy or obvious to me was often life-changing<\/strong> for others. I often thought: \u201cBut everyone knows that.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That wasn\u2019t true. Even the simplest insights<\/strong> can make a huge difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

Lesson:<\/strong> Share your knowledge \u2013 even if it feels obvious to you.<\/p>\n

\n\n\n

7\ufe0f\u20e3 Leave taxes to the pros<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

I thought I could do everything myself<\/strong>: coaching, workshops\u2026 and<\/em> bookkeeping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wrong. Taxes, finances, and planning are areas where I quickly learned to get help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

Lesson:<\/strong> Get support in the areas that are difficult for you \u2013 so you can focus on what you do best.<\/p>\n

8\ufe0f\u20e3 Marketing is not optional<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

I thought good work would speak for itself. But in a crowded market<\/strong>, you need to speak for your business yourself \u2013 otherwise no one will know you exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Self-marketing isn\u2019t vanity \u2013 it\u2019s a survival tool.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

Lesson:<\/strong> It\u2019s not enough to be good \u2013 the world also needs to know you\u2019re good.<\/p>\n

\n\n\n

9\ufe0f\u20e3 Perfection is overrated<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In the past, I stressed about speaking perfect<\/strong> German or English. I thought everything I said or did had to be flawless<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But it turned out: Authenticity<\/strong> is more important<\/strong> than perfection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

Lesson:<\/strong> Show up as you are. Speak with joy and confidence \u2013 people connect with your authenticity<\/strong>, not with your perfect grammar.<\/p>\n

\ud83d\udd1f You\u2019ll never regret building something of your own<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Starting my own business was one of the hardest<\/strong> decisions of my life \u2013 but also the most fulfilling.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There were challenges, sleepless nights, and countless lessons. But looking back, I wouldn\u2019t change a thing<\/strong>. I\u2019ve built something meaningful<\/strong> \u2013 and no one can take that away from me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lesson:<\/strong> The road is hard \u2013 but the reward is priceless. Build something you\u2019re proud of.<\/p>\n

\ud83c\udf81 Bonus: Look for the right people<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ve learned that it can be difficult<\/strong> to find the right support \u2013 especially when it comes to virtual assistants. I\u2019ve already tried two and I\u2019m still searching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But:<\/strong> I\u2019ve meanwhile built a great team<\/a><\/strong>: a wonderful trainer, Mika, an excellent accounting office \u2013 and even help at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lesson:<\/strong> Never give up<\/strong> looking for the right people. One day I\u2019ll also find a great virtual assistant<\/strong> \u2013 maybe she\u2019s already out there.
