Speed reading often sounds like some kind of overhyped trick – like drinking five espressos and suddenly becoming a genius. And honestly? I get the skepticism. I’d feel the same – if I hadn’t experienced for myself what just a bit of training can do. It’s not magic. But it feels a little magical.

This article isn’t here to convince you. It’s simply an invitation. A different way of looking at something you might think you already know. Because maybe the most common ideas about speed reading aren’t truths at all – just habits of thinking.

Myth #1: Speed reading kills the joy of reading

This is the classic one. The cozy book lover says, “I want to relax with my book, not race through it.” And I totally get it. I love getting lost in a book, too. So lost that I forget time, space – and sometimes my tea boiling over (true story).

But here’s the thing: Enjoyment doesn’t depend on speed. Think back to when you first learned to read. Every word was a struggle. Every sentence, an achievement. And still – you enjoyed the story. Over time, your reading got faster. Not because you rushed, but because your brain and eyes got better at working together. The same thing happens with speed reading. It’s just the next step.

You read faster – and still feel everything. Only difference? You get to read more of the books you love. And maybe that’s the most joyful part.

Myth #2: If you read fast, you won’t understand anything

This myth is especially popular among people who read a lot for work: lawyers, researchers, editors – people who swim in text all day.

They say: “If I read too fast, I’ll miss something important.” Makes sense. At first glance. But actually – the opposite can be true. Let’s compare: Driving at 30 km/h vs. 140 km/h. Which one makes you more focused? Right. The faster one.

Speed creates focus. When you move quickly, your brain switches to “now” mode. You stop drifting off, stop thinking about what’s for dinner or how you forgot to reply to that email.

Same with reading. When you train yourself to read faster, you often understand more – not less. You stay in the flow. You stay with the text. And for people who read professionally, that can be a real game changer.

Myth #3: I already read fast enough

Ah, this one’s my favorite. Because it’s so human. Many people walk into my speed reading course thinking, “I’m already pretty quick.” Then we do a little test. Just one minute. A book. A timer. And then… silence. Some blinking. A soft: “Oh.”

The truth is: Most people read about 200 words per minute. Sounds fine – until you look at it over a lifetime. Let’s do the math:
10 minutes of reading a day = around 10 books a year.
Times 50 more years = 500 books.
That’s it.

Now imagine: With some training, you double your reading speed. Suddenly it’s not 500 – it’s 1,000 books. That’s 1,000 ideas. 1,000 adventures. 1,000 chances to be surprised. Speed reading doesn’t just change your pace. It expands your world.

Myth #4: Speed reading is only for nerds

You know the image: someone surrounded by stacks of academic papers, sipping green tea in a library corner. Speed reading? That’s for scientists. Or professors. Or maybe that one guy in your friend group who alphabetizes his bookshelf for fun.

But here’s the truth: Speed reading is for everyone.
For students who want to stay ahead.
For professionals who need to stay sharp.
For parents who wish they had time to finish just one book before their coffee gets cold.
Even for athletes who want to keep up with the latest training methods, or artists who want to dive into a new field.

Speed reading is simply a tool. A way to move through information with clarity – no matter what your passion is. It’s not about being “a certain type of person.” It’s about giving your mind the gift of more input – and your time the gift of space.

Myth #5: Speed reading doesn’t really add value

Let’s be honest – time is one of the most valuable things we have. And once it’s gone, it’s gone. So what if you could get back hours every week? What if reading took you half as long – and left you with double the knowledge?

That’s the real magic of speed reading. Whether you use that extra time to read more books, play with your kids, or just stare at the ceiling and think deep thoughts – it’s yours.
And yes, knowledge is power. But it’s also confidence. It’s creativity. It’s the difference between reacting and responding. Between copying others – and creating your own path.

The more you know, the more clearly you see. And the more clearly you see, the better you act. Not just for yourself – but for everyone around you.

Myth #6: Learning speed reading is complicated and takes forever

It sounds logical, right? If something promises big results, it must be hard. Maybe even painful. Possibly requiring incense, a PhD, or the sacrifice of your free evenings for the next three years.

But here’s the plot twist: Speed reading is surprisingly simple to learn. In my speed reading course, most participants double their reading speed in just one day. Yes – one day. Some even triple it. It’s one of the very few skills where results show up faster than your doubts can talk you out of it.

Of course, it’s not magic. You need to stay with it. It takes focus. A bit of challenge.
But complicated? Not really. It’s more like a switch you didn’t know you had – and once it’s flipped, things start to move.

Speed reading isn’t some elite tool reserved for superhumans. It’s a very doable, very practical, very human way to move your life forward.

Life is too short for unread books

And of course, speed reading isn’t a must. It’s not a competition. It’s not another item on your “self-improvement” checklist. It’s an option. For more clarity. More focus. More stories in your life.

Because honestly: life is too short for unread books.

PS: If you’re curious – here’s the best TEDx talk on the topic ;-).
Reading is a daily companion for many of us, but there are moments when it’s difficult to really read effectively. Maybe you read more slowly than necessary, can’t concentrate, or don’t remember what you’ve read in the end. I know these problems all too well – from my own time at university.

When I studied philosophy, I was used to wrestling with difficult texts. Abstract theories, complex systems of thought – it was often hard work, but manageable. But when I studied sociology in German, I faced a double challenge: not only the difficulty of the texts but also the language became a barrier. I often felt overwhelmed and frustrated. Instead of giving up, I decided to take an additional course in “Reading” alongside my studies. I wanted to improve my reading techniques to be able to read faster and more efficiently. These techniques helped me, and I’d like to share them with you today to show you how you can overcome similar obstacles.

Problem No. 1: Subvocalization – the invisible speed brake

Do you know the feeling of “silently reading along” each word in your head? This subvocalization slows you down tremendously. Although you think it helps you understand the text better, in reality, it only holds you back. Your brain is much faster than you think.

Here’s how you can solve this problem:

Use a reading aid. Use a pen or your finger to guide the text. This helps you avoid subvocalization because you’re focusing on reading faster.

Practice with speed drills. These training methods force you to gradually increase your reading pace. With regular practice, your brain will adapt to processing information faster.

Increase your reading speed step by step. Start by reading a little faster than feels comfortable. Over time, your brain will get used to the new pace.

Once you’ve solved this problem, you’ll not only read faster but also enjoy reading more because it will take you less time to absorb the same content.

I’d be happy to help you! Sign up for my free Speed Reading Workshop to practice techniques like speed drills live.

Problem No. 2: Concentration difficulties – when your thoughts drift

I often experienced my thoughts drifting while reading, especially with difficult texts. During my sociology studies in particular, I often felt distracted. This lack of focus made reading exhausting and led to reading pages without really taking anything in.

How can you solve this problem?

Create a quiet environment. Make sure you have a pleasant reading atmosphere. No phone, no disturbing noises – a quiet workspace can work wonders.

Use the Pomodoro Technique. Set a timer for about 25 minutes of focused reading, followed by a 5-minute break. This method structures your reading time and helps you fully focus on the text.

Take breaks. Give yourself regular “thinking breaks.” Short pauses after challenging passages help your brain process the information better.

The big advantage: Your reading sessions will become more efficient, and you’ll be able to concentrate better over longer periods. You’ll dive deeper into the text and understand it faster.

Problem No. 3: Poor retention – when you don’t remember what you’ve read

You read and then realize at the end that you’ve hardly retained anything. I know this all too well, especially with complex topics. Poor retention is often the result of reading too passively.

Here’s how you solve this problem:

Visualize. Imagine what you’ve read as a vivid movie in your head. This technique anchors the text more deeply in your memory.

Summarize. After each section or chapter, take a few minutes to restate the content in your own words. This technique embeds the information more deeply in your memory.

Read more actively. Ask questions about the text and look for answers. This keeps your brain active and helps you remember.

The effect: By applying these techniques, you won’t just remember more, but you’ll also build a much stronger connection to the content and experience reading as more enriching.

Conclusion: Why it’s worth solving these problems

Slow reading, lack of concentration, and quickly forgetting content are common obstacles that make reading harder. But you can overcome these problems. With the right techniques, you can read faster and more efficiently, improve your concentration, and retain more of what you read.

Do you want the shortcut to efficient reading?

Sign up for my free Speed Reading Workshop, and I’ll show you live how to finally solve these problems. Together, we’ll turn reading into a positive and productive experience – without the frustration I know all too well.

The fourth quarter has begun, and as the year comes to an end, I still see plenty of opportunities to achieve great things. Instead of a traditional to-do list, I’ve created a To-Want List. Why? Because it’s about what I really want to experience – not just what needs to get done. And the best part? The joy I feel when I bring these wishes and goals to life.

Do you know the concept of the 12-Week Year, popularized by Brian P. Moran and Michael Lennington? Instead of setting goals for a whole year, I work in 12-week blocks. This helps me focus on the most important things and be more productive. With my new To-Want List for Q4, I want to finish the year on a high note.

Have you ever stood in front of a giant pile of books and thought: “How on earth am I supposed to read all of this?” Then you’re not alone. For book lovers as well as professionals, the reading list can feel like a mountain that keeps growing. But what if I told you there’s a way to climb that mountain faster than you ever thought possible?

Welcome to Speed Reading.

But what exactly is speed reading? And is it just a fad, or can it really change the way you absorb information? Let’s dive deeper.

Speed Reading: The Basics

Speed reading is essentially what it sounds like: reading faster. But it’s not just about skimming pages superficially. Real speed readers take in information much faster while still understanding it.

Most of us read at about 150–300 words per minute (WPM), roughly the same as we speak. With speed reading techniques, we can double, triple, or even quadruple that speed. Imagine finishing your favorite book in a fraction of the time it normally takes you. Tempting, isn’t it?

A Short History of Speed Reading

You might be surprised to hear that speed reading isn’t a new phenomenon. The concept has been around for a while but only became popular in the mid-20th century.

One of the earliest roots goes back to World War II, when pilots were trained to quickly identify enemy aircraft by being shown images at shorter and shorter intervals. This boosted their ability to process visual information faster — a life-or-death skill.

Building on this idea, American teacher Evelyn Wood popularized speed reading in the 1950s. Legend has it she discovered the method by accident. While struggling with a dense text, she noticed she could read faster by running her hand across the page. From this observation, she developed what became known as Reading Dynamics, with the use of a hand or finger as a guide — a core technique in modern speed reading.

Wood’s method drew major attention, especially after reports that President John F. Kennedy used speed reading to deal with the massive amount of daily information he faced. By the 1960s, speed reading courses had spread across the U.S., and people were eager to increase their reading speed.

Since then, speed reading has continued to evolve, incorporating insights from psychology and cognitive science to refine and improve techniques. The digital age has only intensified interest, as the volume of information we must process keeps growing.

How Does Speed Reading Work?

Sounds cool, but how does it actually work? At its core, speed reading is built on a few key techniques:

Reducing Subvocalization: That inner voice in your head that reads along with you? It slows you down. Speed readers train to minimize it, allowing them to process text faster.

As Hegel once said: “To read a text is to understand its spirit.” Reading is not just mechanical but a philosophical exercise to grasp essence. By reducing subvocalization, speed readers aim to connect directly with meaning rather than word-by-word vocalization.

Using Visual Guides: Remember when your teacher told you not to use your finger to follow the text? Well… they were wrong. (Oops!) Using your finger, a pen, or even just your eyes as a guide helps keep focus and increase speed.

Interval Training: Just like your brain adapts to faster speeds on the highway, it can adapt to faster reading speeds. Interval training means pushing your reading pace beyond comfort for short bursts, then returning to a manageable speed. For example, read at double speed for a few minutes, then slow down to process. Over time, your brain gets trained to handle more information faster.

The World Record in Speed Reading

While many achieve impressive speeds, the current Guinness World Record for speed reading is held by Howard Berg, who claims to read over 25,000 words per minute. Accuracy at such speeds is often debated, but his achievement earned him recognition as the world’s fastest reader — showing the incredible potential of trained human cognition.

Why Bother With Speed Reading?

You may be thinking: “Why should I care? I read just fine at my own pace.”
Here’s the thing: speed reading isn’t only about speed. It’s about efficiency, productivity, and yes — enjoyment.

Save Time: Imagine reading your work reports, emails, or dense academic papers in half the time. It’s like gaining extra hours in your day.

Expand Your Knowledge: The faster you read, the more you can read. And the more you read, the more you know. Or as Hegel would say: “The true is the whole” — meaning that by accumulating knowledge, you move closer to a fuller understanding of the world.

Stay Ahead: In today’s fast-paced world, keeping up with the latest trends, research, and developments is crucial. Speed reading gives you an edge.

Is Speed Reading Right for You?

Let’s be honest: speed reading isn’t for every situation. If you’re aiming for deep comprehension or savoring every word of a beautifully written novel, slower reading is better.

But if you’re working through information-heavy texts or want to expand your knowledge quickly? Then speed reading might just be your new best friend.

How to Get Started

Ready to give speed reading a try? Here’s how:

Practice mindfully: Start with familiar material — news articles, blogs (like this one!), or even your emails. Then work your way up.

Use a timer: Track your reading speed to see your progress. Watching your WPM rise is motivating!

Take breaks: Speed reading is mental training. Give your brain time to recharge.

Stay consistent: Like any skill, speed reading improves with practice. Dedicate a little time daily to train your eyes and brain.

Join my Speed Reading Course: Want to take your skills to the next level? My Speed Reading Course starts soon! You can also book me for workshops at your organization or for 1:1 coaching. Let’s unlock your full reading potential together.

Retention vs. Speed: Does It Stick?

A common question is: “Do you actually remember what you’ve read? Is it as sustainable as slow reading?”
It’s a fair concern. But speed reading is more than quick reading — it’s part of a comprehensive training designed to boost both speed and comprehension.

The goal of speed reading training is to increase speed without sacrificing understanding. In fact, after practice, you automatically read faster while also focusing better. That means you retain more information. Why? Because you’re not only faster but also more concentrated.

You learn to read like a pro — with a clear goal of combining efficiency with enjoyment. Over time, you become a skilled reader who unites the best of both worlds: speed and a “happy brain.” Reading becomes not only quicker but also more sustainable and more satisfying.

Final Thoughts

Speed reading isn’t just a neat party trick; it’s a skill that can transform your relationship with the written word. Whether you want to stay ahead in your career, keep up with current events, or finally conquer that growing stack of books — speed reading can give you the tools to do it faster, and maybe even better.

So, what do you think? Are you ready to turn that mountain of books into a molehill?
